The Tale of One Man's Journey. (China Studies, 8) Leiden: Brill 2006.
view contents / close contents
Book Description
This richly illustrated book provides a glimpse into the belief system and the material wealth
of the social elite in pre-Imperial China through a close analysis of tomb contents and excavated
bamboo texts.
The point of departure is the textual and material evidence found in one tomb of an elite man buried
in 316 BCE near a once wealthy middle Yangzi River valley metropolis. Particular emphasis is placed
on the role of cosmological symbolism and the nature of the spirit world. The author shows how
illness and death were perceived as steps in a spiritual journey from one realm into another.
Transmitted textual records are compared with excavated texts. The layout and contents of this
multi-chambered tomb are analyzed as are the contents of two texts, a record of divination and
sacrifices performed during the last three years of the occupant’s life and a tomb inventory record
of mortuary gifts. The texts are fully translated and annotated in the appendices.
A first-time close-up view of a set of local beliefs which not only reflect the larger ancient
Chinese religious system but also underlay the rich intellectual and artistic life of pre-Imperial
China.
With first full translations of texts previously unknown to all except a small handful of
sinologists.

DAI Xiangming: Pottery Production, Settlement Patterns, and Development of Social
Complexity in the Yuanqu Basin, North-Central China. BAR International Series 1502,
Oxford: Archaeopress 2006.
view contents / close contents
Book Description
This work investigates the development of social complexity and the changes of modes of pottery
production from the Neolithic to early Bronze Age in the Yuanqu Basin, north-central China. The
research focuses on the development of specialised pottery production in different societies.
Through settlement pattern studies, the author examines the social changes during eight cultural
periods from the Neolithic to the early Bronze Age (ca. 6200-1300 B.C.). The settlement analyses
address 46 sites, including seven excavated sites in the Yuanqu Basin. This study argues that the
initial and low-level specialisation might occur in the simple and non-stratified society, and the
dramatic change in the mode of pottery production or the degree of specialisation is not necessarily
related to the emergence and development of chiefdom-level societies, but rather associated with the
formation of state-level societies, as demonstrated by the Yuanqu case.

Chinese Society in the Age of Confucius (1000-250 BC): The Archaeological Evidence.
(Ideas, Debates and Perspectives 2) Los Angeles: Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA 2006.

Book Description
The Late Bronze Age (ca. 1000-250 BC) was a crucial period during which the Chinese Classics came
into being and famous thinkers such as Confucius (ca. 551-479 BC) laid the intellectual foundations
of traditional Chinese civilization. Complementing and often challenging the surviving writings,
Lothar von Falkenhausen develops a self-consciously archaeological perspective on the social
conditions in this time. He analyzes clan and lineage organization, social stratification, gender
and ethnic differences, as well as social change over time. Falkenhausen not only presents new data,
but also thinks about these data in new ways, emphasizing the nexus between the social order and
ritual practices and introducing anthropological approaches as-yet rarely tested in China.
This book presents the archaeological perspective on the social conditions of the Late Bronze Age
(ca. 1000-250 BC) period including clan and lineage organization, social stratification, gender and
ethnic differences, as well as social change over time.

Book Description
The Bronze Age state of the Western Zhou represented a ground-breaking
period in Chinese culture and civilization. This book addresses the
complex relationship between geography and political power within the
context of the crisis and fall of that state between 1045 and 771 B.C.
Drawing on the latest archaeological discoveries, the book shows how
inscribed bronze vessels can be used to reveal changes in the political
space of the period, and explores literary and geographical evidence to
produce a coherent understanding of the Bronze Age past.

Chr. Erst im letzten
Abschnitt des Neolithikums, im 3. Jahrtausend v.

BATTEN, Bruce L.: Gateway to Japan: Hakata in War and Peace, 500-1300.
Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press 2006.
view contents / close contents
Book Description
A thousand years ago, most visitors to Japan would have arrived by ship at Hakata Bay, the one
and only authorized gateway to Japan. Hakata was the location of the Kôrokan, an official
guest-house for foreign visitors that is currently yielding its secrets to the spades of Japanese
archaeologists. Nearby was Dazaifu, the imperial capital of western Japan, surrounded by mountain
fortresses and defended by an army of border guards. Over the ages, Hakata was a staging ground for
Japanese troops on their way to Korea and ground zero for foreign invasions of Japan. Through the
port passed a rich variety of diplomats, immigrants, raiders, and traders, both Japanese and
foreign.
Gateway to Japan spotlights four categories of cross-cultural interaction—war, diplomacy, piracy,
and trade—over a period of eight hundred years to gain insight into several larger questions about
Japan and its place in the world: How and why did Hakata come to serve as the country’s “front
door”? How did geography influence the development of state and society in the Japanese archipelago?
Has Japan been historically open or closed to outside influence? Why are Japanese so profoundly
ambivalent about other places and people?
Individual chapters focus on Chinese expansionism and its consequences for Japan and East Asia as a
whole; the subtle (and not-so-subtle) contradictions and obfuscations of the diplomatic process as
seen in Japanese treatment of Korean envoys visiting Kyushu; random but sometimes devastating
attacks on Kyushu by Korean (and sometimes Japanese) pirates; and foreign commerce in and around
Hakata, which turns out to be neither fully “foreign” nor fully “commerce” in the modern sense of
the word. The conclusion briefly traces the story forward into medieval and early modern times.
Enriched by fascinating historical vignettes and dozens of maps and photographs, this engagingly
written volume explores issues not only important for Japan’s early history but also highly
pertinent to Japan’s role in the world today. Now, as in the period examined here, Japan has one
principal entry point (the international airport at Narita); its relationship with the outside world
(both East and West) is ambivalent; and, while sometimes astonishingly open-minded, Japanese are at
other times frustratingly exclusive in their dealings with non-Japanese. Gateway to Japan will be of
substantial interest to all students of Japan, East Asia, and intercultural studies.

Book Description
This volume addresses the enigma of the spread of the Mounded Tomb Culture in Early Kofun period
Japan. With a seeming lack of clear territorial administration, how did the Miwa paramounts obtain
the loyalties and services of independent chieftains in western Japan to participate in an elite
sub-culture marked by a homogeneous burial ritual? A case is built for regarding a cult surrounding
the legendary Queen Himiko as the attractor and glue for the Early Kofun socio-political system:
Himiko as the earthly analog of China’s Queen Mother of the West.

MIZOGUCHI, Koji: Archaeology, Society and Identity in Modern Japan (Cambridge Studies
in Archaeology), Cambridge (UK): Cambridge University Press 2006.

Book Description
This bold and illuminating study examines the role of archaeology in the formation of the modern Japanese
nation and explores the processes by which archaeological practice is shaped by national social and
intellectual discourse. Leading Japanese archaeologist Koji Mizoguchi argues that an understanding of
the past has been a central component in the creation of national identities and modern nation states
and that, since its emergence as a distinct academic discipline in the modern era, archaeology has played
an important role in shaping that understanding. By examining in parallel the uniquely intense process
of modernisation experienced by Japan and the history of Japanese archaeology, Mizoguchi explores the
close interrelationship between archaeology, society and modernity, helping to explain why we do archaeology
in the way that we do. This book is essential reading for anybody with an interest in the history of
archaeology or modern Japan.

Book Description
This volume, edited by Joan Piggott (University of Southern California, Los Angeles), includes
fourteen essays, originally written in Japanese and here interpreted in English. It introduces
readers to a broader array of historical and archaeological research on center-periphery relations
than has ever before been available to English readers. Each essay has been translated, annotated,
and introduced by a specialist who selected it for its invaluable contribution to his or her own
work, and who here renders it into English for a non-specialist audience.
The book features thirteen newly created maps, and also includes an exhaustive list of sources
(including Chinese characters). Together with its readable and well-annotated text, extensive
glossary, rich bibliography, and comprehensive index, these combined tools make for a valuable
resource to scholars and students interested in premodern Japan.
Researchers whose work has been interpreted include Tsude Hiroshi, Kobayashi Yukio, Hara Hidesaburô,
Inoue Tatsuo, Takahashi Tomio, Takeda Sachiko, Hotate Michihisa, Morita Tei, Sasaki Muneo, Toda
Yoshimi, Miyazaki Yasumitsu, Motoki Yasuo, Ishimoda Shô, and Koyama Yasunori. Scholar-interpreters
include Mikael Adolphson, Michiko Aoki, Bruce Batten, Walter Edwards, Karl Friday, Jan Goodwin,
Gustav Heldt, and Joan Piggott.
"Particularly for those interested in the complex and often inaccessible world of Japanese
historiography for what the translators label
"the classical age."
This volume will prove a handy guide. . . .[It] will allow Anglophone historians a look at the
assumptions, methods, and interpretations of our Japanese colleagues in all their intricacy."

Book Description
Originally published as Le commerce extérieur du Japon des origines au XVIe siècle in 1988, this new
edition of the landmark French study chronicles Japan’s transformation from an importer of
continental luxury items, raw materials, and techniques to an exporter of high-quality merchandise
over nearly a millennium. The vicissitudes of foreign trade policy, as well as the volume and
balance of trade, are examined within the context of regional political and economic developments.
All aspects of state-sanctioned and unofficial external commerce are considered. Indeed, this volume
reveals that proliferation of private foreign trade constituted a vital link between Japan and its
neighbors throughout the suspension of diplomatic relations from the ninth to the fourteenth
century. Evidence culled from Japanese, Chinese, and Korean annals and administrative compendia,
archaeological excavations, classic literature, artifact collections, and monk and courtier diaries
attests to the spectacular diversity of foreign trade goods and their significance in pre-Tokugawa
Japanese society.
Methodically revised, and featuring an updated, expanded bibliography and redesigned maps, as well
as a précis on the state of the field since the original publication, the 2006 English edition is an
indispensable resource for scholars and the teaching of premodern East Asian regional history.

Book Description
The 36 chapters in this collection have been selected to give an overview of recent research into
prehistoric and early historic archaeology in Southeast Asia. In the first chapter Her Royal
Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindorn of Thailand comments on the significance of the inscriptions
from the important Khmer temple, Prasat Phnom Rung in northeastern Thailand. Following this,
Professor Charles Higham gives an original and insightful survey of the prehistoric threads linking
south China and the countries of modern Southeast Asia.
The writers in this book are all engaged in archaeological and historical research in the region,
and they range from senior professional academic teachers to new students just starting to make
their contributions to an evolving story of the past of many of the nation states of modern
Southeast Asia. The essays are organised into 7 broad themes: the late Pleistocene and early
Holocene communities; new perspectives on the Neolithic; Bronze and Iron Age mortuary practices;
Iron Age landscapes and cultures; emerging early states and trading ports; urban landscapes; and
regional and long-distance exchange relations.
This book makes a significant contribution to the knowledge of a complex, dynamic and multiethnic

Book Description
The archaeology of the Russian Far East is rich in new and sometimes surprising discoveries. Very
early pottery dates, in several locations, are perhaps the most important and interesting of these
finds. Connections with other parts of the Far East are also established in these new studies. The
chapters that follow in this regional synthesis elaborate these themes. Arranged in chronological
order and by region, each is written by a specialist who has participated in some or all of the
archaeological expeditions reported here. The chapters are replete with archaeological details,
allowing the reader to judge the interpretations independently. Illustrations and maps add to the
information provided. They show not just the unanticipated richness of the archaeology of the
Russian Far East but, more important, the contributions these sites can make to the archaeology of
the region and of the world.

Book Description
This is the first book to examine directly the biology and lives of the people
of South East Asia. Bringing together the most active researchers in late Pleistcene/Holocene
Southeast Asian human osteology, the book deals with two major approaches to studying human skeletal
remains. Using analysis of the physical appearance of the region's past peoples, the first section
explores such issues as the first peopling of the region, the evidence for subsequent migratory
patterns (particularly between Southeast and Northeast Asia) and counter arguments centring on in
situ micro-evolutionary change. The second section reconstructs the health of these same people
in the context of major economic and demographic changes over time, including those changes caused
by the adoption or intensification of agriculture. Written for archaeologists, bioarchaeologists and
biological anthropologists, it is a fascinating insight into the bioarchaeology of this important
region.
